Things Yet Mastered

Most times I’m in my hometown of Baker City, OR I swing by my childhood home (pictured above). I do this with most of the places that I lived for a period of time. Visiting these places re-connects me to my history and story arc. They remind me of what I’ve overcome. And they each serve as a progress benchmark.

Until my recent visit, it had been 5 years since I drove by my childhood home. I’ve come along way since the last visit. And I’ve come a very long way since living at 2610 Indiana (1976–1985) — literally, spiritually, emotionally. So much so that when I drove by the house a few weeks ago, I was not overwhelmed with a sense of resentment and negative memories. I simply accepted this is part of my story. And that each part of the story informs the next.

I’ve reached a place where I’m happy most days; at peace most days. I can confidently coach, give great speeches, converse with ease. I feel whole, healed. But I know that insecure, frightened boy that lived in that house is still a part of me. And for that, I’m thankful. Because those parts of me are continued opportunities for growth.
