Always something to work on.

“What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.”
- Black Elk

“Iteration” is one of my favorite words. So is “liminal”. Both of these words speak to me of the perpetual evolution that we are all participating in, consciously or unconsciously.

In essence, life is art. As such, understanding that it is both iterative and full of liminal moments helps us to understand how to use our time, energy and other resources more effectively. Rather than establishing fixed plans that rarely work out, we can have clear intentions but be flexible and agile in how it all unfolds. Iteration helps us realize that time always has an edge and part of the human experience is to find that edge.

Experiencing life as an unfolding is not a new concept. Many Native American cultures describe time not as an arc but as a rug or blanket that is perpetually unrolling to reveal whatever is next. By adopting a more ancient few of how time unfolds we can see how the mystery of it all contributes to a joyful, vibrant life. We can see unpredictability through the lens of possibility rather than as a problem to solve.
