On Friday, 1/24 I had the absolute privilege of speaking at Creative Mornings — Austin. The theme was “roots” so I spoke about how our truest identity (the root of our soul) is as a creative. I talked about my ranch roots and my 49-year journey to identify as a creative; how I still struggle to say that I’m a creative. I spoke about the sacred responsibility of creatives to turn the evolutionary wheel.

I opened by doing something I’d never done before: I read something I wrote in public. You can read it below.

Thank you to Michael for the prompt to reach out to CreativeMornings. A very special thank you to Lynna for the suggestion to open with the poem. And to Emily for the encouragement and reminders. And to the many friends that showed up to support. I’m humbled beyond words.

Do You Really Think? - By Justin Foster ©

Do you really think

all you’re here to do is sit in a pew

or a cubicle zoo?

Lay on the couch?

Drift through life?

Lie to your spouse

About who you really are?

Do you really think

God is found in a place
